MARY BEATS JANE – s/t

This is Pete Dolving’s (the Haunted vocalist) first band. the opening riff of “Neighborhood Psycho” alone is better than anything the Haunted ever did. Are the Haunted even around anymore? This is an interesting release, cause it was on Geffen Records in 1994, but it sounds and feels more like an 80s metal record. A lot of Exodus, early Anthrax, Vio-Lence etc. so you know… it kinda rules. The pre-chorus of “This Life” is a bit on the Alice in Chains Dirt side of things… so maybe it’s somewhere between 80s thrash and post glam/pre grunge early 90s arena metal. The first Haunted album was ok. I don’t have a copy of it anymore. I also had a copy of the Haunted Made Me Do It, but all I have left from that is a bumper sticker on one of my cabinets. I remember trying to like it, but that singer they got after Dolving had no personality or presence. I always did like Dolving’s vocals. There’s actually quite a bit of AiC on this, but it’s done the right way. Holy shit what’s with the flute on “Blood and Oil”? got my copy of the Church Whip LP in the mail today. Early contender for my favorite release of the year. Watched this dumb movie called Sushi Girl last night. Been a while since I saw a Tarantino rip-off this blatant and utterly clueless. If the Boondocks Saints was a piss poor aping of piss poor Tarantino apings (Things to do in Denver When You’re Dead, Truth or Consequences NM, 2 Days in the Valley), than Sushi Girl is a piss poor aping of a piss poor aping of piss poor apings. Annoying phony tough asshole characters that have no chemistry or personality. And the guy that was supposed to be the “loose cannon”… oh my god I can’t remember hating something in a movie as much as this goofball. He thinks he’s a biker, but really he’s just a Juggalo with some Sons of Anarchy gear. At least the titular girl was super pretty and looked amazing naked and covered in raw fish.

Favorite Tracks: “Old”, “Grind”, “Wasted”, “Gunshot”

V/A – the Beavis and Butt-Head Experience

Pretty sure my brother had this when it came out in 93. pretty sure everyone my age had this when it came out. I remember watching the premiere of the stupid ass Cher duet video. It’s pretty mental how fast B&B took over. This crude cartoon about mongoloid 15 year olds torturing animals and watching Grim Reaper videos really took the country by storm. We had most of the merch; comics, trading cards, key chains, and I don’t think we ever missed a Moronathon. There are actually some really cool tracks on this release, including one of my favorite Nirvana songs. Although how can you do a B&B comp and not have GWAR on it? “Your butt sucks.” The worst thing about the popularity of the show was every stupid fucking shithead I knew doing awful impressions, no matter if the situation called for it. I think the only thing more annoying was Jim Carrey impressions. I love that Mike Judge casually mocked this cumsacks via Dooley on King of the Hill. Remember when Anthrax was on Married… With Children? Remember the Neurosis shirt on Home Improvement? ISN’T SO COOL WHEN METAL HAPPENS ON THINGS? I would like to see that make a comeback. Pig Destroyer could do a guest spot on Modern Family or something. Megadeth's "99 Ways to Die" was a 5th grade recess favorite. i remember the video had a shirtless kid holding a gun or something. trying to get some of that "Jeremy" mojo, eh Mustaine?

Favorite Tracks: Nirvana – “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die”, “Come to Butthead”, White Zombie – “I Am Hell”, Primus – “Poetry and Prose”

ALBERT AYLER – Complete Live at the Slug’s Saloon Recordings

i almost typed about how little I know about jazz, but then I realized I probably said that before. I got into Albert Ayler after reading Thoughts of Ionesco’s influence list (influelist?). I only ever picked up the Impulse Story, but I usually cruise the jazz sections (saxtions? AHHHHH) looking for his stuff, never really finding anything. He basically picks up where Coltrane left off on Ascension, which is the only Coltrane I own. I’m not a very good music appreciator I know. Even now, where I should be rattling off a bunch of tired ass beat poetry platitudes about the multiplying genius of an Albert Ayler performance, I’m still fighting the urge to turn the self-conversation into yet another metallic hardcore verbal fap session. Ayler does it for me cause he had a sense of mood and emotion in his compositions. They’re free flowing and nearly impossible to pin down, but there is also a persistent melodic undercurrent that counter-acts the aural surrealism, creating something that’s somehow both foreign and familiar. Ok I wrote something smart (I think), so maybe we should talk about hot dogging giant tits with a dollop of white mustard. You know, sperm.

Favorite tracks – “Our Prayer”, “Ghosts”

NAKED CITY – Radio

Another one of those “I’m so lucky to have found you / what kind of cervix-hole would give this up?” finds. Maybe they bought that rad box set from a few years ago that had all their stuff. Hands down one of my top ten favorite bands of all time. Every mall in America should have Leng T’che playing in a constant loop. Every eatery in the country should have Torture Garden alternating with Grand Guignol at all times. Every film soundtrack, television soundtrack, national anthem, and variation of “Happy Birthday” ever produced in any and all countries should be replaced with Heretic in surround sound. Maryland Death Fest should replace the word “Maryland” with “NAKED CITY”, the word “Death” with “NAKED CITY”, and the word “Fest” with “NAKED CITY”. The NAKED CITY NAKED CITY NAKED CITY 2014 AND BEYOND. Naked City would headline, and all the bands would play Naked City songs, and replace all their members with Naked City. It will last for 6 and Half weeks, spread into every bar, then every place of business, then every home. Then it will spill over into sporting events, movie productions, television premiers, award ceremonies, magazine and literary publications, porn shoots, national and regional elections of all kinds… and then you can cum… only jizz has been replaced with Naked City. Naked City.

Naked City: Naked City, Naked City, Naked City, Naked City.

Custom designed 19 x 13” Magnetic-Closure Deluxe Clothbound Hardcover Box Set
Limited edition of 300 copies
Set includes: 2 x LPs pressed on 210 gram vinyl + CD + 3 Silk Screened Posters + Sticker

this is too fucking cool.

i got turned on to Born Without a Face around 2006 while looking over Starkweather's myspace page.they used to have this massive list of bands in the "influences" section of their profile, and the name "Born Without a Face" stuck out to me. at the time their stuff was very rare, practically non-existent. i did find a blog that had pretty much everything up for d/l. the quality wasn't the best, but the content was there, so i was happy to have it.

taking crossover music to more caustic, challenging realms in the musical, lyrical, and aesthetic departments,  BWAF could very well be considered the first step in what would become the "modern" metalcore band, setting the stage for RORSCHACH, STARKWEATHER, UNRUH, JESUIT, THOUGHTS OF IONESCO, LA GRITONA, and other experimental barbarians that would enrich underground metal and hardcore throughout the 1990s and 2000s. and they did this in the early-mid 80s, ending it 3 years before Rorschach formed to take the style even farther. anyone interested in this particular form of unrestrained subterranean expression should fork over the monies for this box set. it's well worth it.

SKINNY PUPPY – Remission

Yeah another SP album. This one reminds me of those “goth” nights at the local club… the ones I go to when I’m bored, horny, prowly, and still too much of a rooster’s vagina to do anything about it. But let’s not do that again. I dug out this old Underwood typewriter from the back of my shelves so I could display it in my room. It doesn’t work, but it’s an undeniably cool piece of equipment to have displayed. I wish it did work. Lately I’d rather write on a typewriter… but the reality is all it would do is create more clutter. I don’t necessarily think I’m a hoarder, as hoarders just acquire random objects so they can personalize what is essentially impersonal. I know my space is limited, but I love looking around my room and seeing all the books, DVDs, CDs, LPs, comics, etc. it’s soothing. I don’t know how people maintain their sanity with nothing on their walls, no physical media on their shelves, no shelves at all… antiseptic and institutional. One time I watched one of those “what not to do when looking for a date” programs. The whole program basically boiled down to a handful of really awful individuals saying that it’s wrong to be into anything other than what your prospective sexual conquests might be into, so don’t have any interests outside of MEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEMEME.   A lot of the gripes were justified, if a bit typical (Tapout shirts, jeans with designs on them, etc) but then one woman said “I can’t be with a guy who has posters on his walls”. Eugh. And some women have the ovarian fortitude to call men shallow? Guys can be shallow, but just about different things. Me personally, I can tolerate differences in tastes, even find them endearing, if I find the person I’m attracted to interesting, pleasant, sexually alluring, etc. I may bust balls about someone liking something I find dull or intellectually repugnant, but it’s not a deal breaker. I also don’t care how much money someone makes, or if they live with their parents, etc. a lot of women I’ve encountered in the last 4 years (*gun cocks*) that I’ve been single are the opposite of all the things I just mentioned. I don’t think my expectations are unreasonable, let alone unrealistic. This isn’t coming from a place of misogyny, either. If that was the case, I wouldn’t even bother looking for someone with which to share my company. Nor is it coming from a place of desperation. I also don’t think I’m “batting out of my league” … it’s just that some people have such a high opinion of themselves that they think they deserve someone that only exists in a supermarket romance novel, an ideal no men can possibly live up to. Maybe it’s their revenge for the admittedly unfair body image that’s been forced upon them since the 1980s. well that’s fine, except most of us move past that after initial adolescence, and it’s counterproductive to hold a grudge over something that’s already been deconstructed, disproved, and disavowed by a great many number of men and women. There is no one standard for beauty. Guys do have their types that they are most attracted to, and some rarely deviate from that, but you’ll find that those types do tend to differ from person to person. One guy may be into athletic black girls, another guy fair skinned waifs. One is into loud party girls, another is into ones that are more regal. Some like girls that are a little bigger, others wanna see rib bones. I’m tired of talking about this. no one listens anyway.

Favorite tracks: “Incision”, “Film”, “Solvent”, “Glass Out”

SAMAEL – Ceremony of Opposites / Rebellion

Daaaaaaaayummmm this band used to be so fucking good. A lot of the early-mid 90s Century Media releases were pretty impressive. SYL, Sentenced, Tiamat (ffffff @ Clouds), EHG of course, the Gathering was okay for a little while.. I even dig one Nevermore album (Politics of Ecstasy). I still have a few of those Identity comps. They had their share of dopey stuff, too. Stuck Mojo was always goofy as hell. If you ever wanted Living Color to collaborate with 25 Ta Life… then what is wrong with you? I think the lyrics on one of their songs was “skip to the loo and see me shoo!”. It was that one video they did with all the WCW wrestlers. Well actually it was just DDP and Raven’s Flock. I loved that feud. A watered down version of Tommy Dreamer vs. Raven in ECW, but still entertaining. It even crossed over onto MTV’s Total Request Live, where Raven creamed DDP with a Stop Sign. Actually made that show bearable. This album is sort of where Samael starts to get a little dumb, but there’s just enough morose death metal to offset the bonehead grooves. Another fucking awesome Century Media release is Ulver’s Nattens Madgrigal. Seriously one of the best black metal albums ever. Super raw, but still maintaining enough clarity to make out the crazy riffs. Nothing else that band ever did has held my attention, but that’s what makes Madrigal even more singular and awesome. I love this weird riff on “Mask of Red Death”. I’m tired of talking.

Favorite tracks: “Mask of Red Death”, “Flagellation”, “After the Sepulture”, “Into the Pentagram”,

EXIT 13 - … Just a Few More Hits

I never really saw the big deal with this group. i guess Dan Lilker? But I don’t wanna jump on the “I hate Lilker” bandwagon (hi, Brian). I’m still an unashamed Brutal Truth fan, and I remember Hemlock being ok… but I haven’t heard them in a long time. I like the riffs on “Legalize Hemp Now”. They sort of sound like early Today is the Day. These vocals are atrocious. I guess the idea was to make it sound like someone muttering into a soupbowl filled with bong water. As a general rule, I think weed “culture” is fucking stupid, and i hope pot gets legalized just so these one-track minded tuckfards will no longer be able to think of themselves as transgressive outlaws. Brutal Truth uses pot images and references, but at least they talk about other stuff, too. I got Ethos Musik like a million years ago at the behest of internet grind people who swore its awesomness, but it never really connected with me. they’re almost like Jam-Grind or something… like it’s not thought out. I guess that’s why some people dig them, cause it’s pretty easy. Also again… the “DURHURHUR POT DURHURHUR JOINTS” thing. is it just me, or is most pot “humor” merely just people saying “Weed!” followed by the kind of giggling that makes you want to press a crowbar into the soft spot of a newborn’s head?

Favorite tracks: “A Man and His Lawnmower”, “Oral Fixation”, “A Constant Persistence of Annoyance”, “Snakes and Alligators”

PITCH SHIFTER – Industrial

Holy fucking shit I love early Pitch Shifter. One of my favorite sub-sub genres of metal is the post-Godflesh/pre-Fear Factory industrial sludge metal. Skin Chamber, Spine Wrench, Optimum Wound Profile, Candiru, motherfucking Dead World. So nightmarishly punishing. Even FF on their demos, Concrete, and Soul of a New Machine still kinda kick my ass. I used to love all of Fear Factory’s stuff. When I first got into metal it was the mind-late 90s when all the Bounce Metal stuff was king shit of big-pants mountain. FF (starting on Demanufacture, continuing on Obsolete, and diarrhea-pantsing on Digimortal) , Machine Head, 90s Sepultura, Biohazard. I remember being really psyched about Pissing Razors and Skinlab around ’99, but those bands (along with Lungbrush and others) really signified the downfall of that genre. They were too stupid for me, and at that time I was still putting together fantasy Ozzfest line-ups. I remember at that time they weren’t even reffered to as metal bands. Roadrunner bios always called these groups “Aggro-Rock” or “Extreme Alternative”. Everyone I went to school with at the time called anything heavier than Green Day “hardcore”. Slayer? Hardcore. Snot? Hardcore. Soulfly? Hardcore. Coal Chamber? Hardcore. Sevendust? Hardcore. I met one kid who listened to all the same metal bands that I did, but he called himself a “hardcore head”. He actually said “I’m a Hardcore Head!”. I have never heard anyone before or since refer to themselves in such a way. So in short “Face it, You’re a Metal Band” by AxCx played in my head a lot. Anyway, back to Industrial Metal. I don’t know what it is about this style that still resonates with me. I guess it’s the mix of crushing heaviness with the bleak atmosphere/subject matter. It’s metal without all the cartoony bullshit and industrial without the performance art delusions. I even like the revival bands that have popped up in the last few years. Circle of Animals, Author & Punisher, Sewer Goddess, our niggas in Bloodkitt. It’s fucking sad how far off Pitch Shifter fell in the late 90s. I think my first exposure to them was on MTV’s Spring Break 99 (POSER ALERT). They played that ass-ass song “Genius” on some weak “rock showcase” with Limp Bizkit before they got super big. Then when I started digging into Earache’s back catalog, I saw their name. I think for a while I thought that the octo-choads from Spring Break were some shitty new band who stole the name from this bad-ass nightmare band. oh yeah, someone needs to put the Skin Chamber records on vinyl.

Favorite Tracks: “Brutal Cancroid”, “Gravid Rage”, “Skin Grip”, “Inflammator”

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN – Strategies against Architecture II

I’ve listened to this band for years and I still forget how to pronounce “Einsturzende’. I heard Sasha Grey say it in an interview, but when I came in my pants the part of my brain that retains complex and/or foreign pronunciations must have dribbled out as well. It’s her birthday today. I know there’s been somewhat of a backlash (as there usually is these days whenever someone or something has been semi-popular for more than 10 minutes), but I’ll always be a fanboy. But let’s not get too bogged down in porn discussions. Get in contact with me personally if you wanna trade favorites like trading cards and dinosaur toys. This is a two-disc collection. It’s sort of a blend between the junkyard clanging and burning oil howling of the early Neubauten and the more heavy industrial rhythms of the later stuff. I think I first heard about them when I read Get in the Van. I first heard of Diamanda Galas in that book as well. Been a while since I heard anything from her. Used to listen to her all the time. It’s super-fucking windy out. Sounds like trains rushing past my window. Always on my day off. Watched Joe D’Amato’s Anthropophagus last night. There must be something wrong with me, cause I wasn’t nearly as mortified by it as some others. I really liked it. It had that “is this a dream?” vibe that makes Italian horror films from the late 70s – the early 90s so rich and wonderful. The villain was very interesting; a crusty cannibal castaway. Like D’Amato’s other classic Buio Omega, the violence was more upsetting and messy than in other Italian films, where the blood is very rock-operatic. Buio Omega and Anthropophagus have more of a desolate vibe about them… more of a sadness, and I like that a lot. This track “Seele Brenn” is sinister-incarnate. This might be the darkest stuff I’ve heard from Neubauten. Some really incredible sounds on this one. Think it’s my favorite. I also love those oversized CD cases they use to make for double disc sets. Don’t know why… just an aesthetic thing I guess. Wrote a song at work yesterday called “Ball Gag Eye Patch”. I seriously have to either stop writing so many lyrics or start like 3 more music projects to have a place for them. There’s way too much. May do another round of re-writes soon. Who cares though, right? I’m sort of glad to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t get responses from BokayLupus. Hey I just remembered Lauren Hill was in Sister Act 2. those kids were bad news, man. They listened to rap music and wore lipstick like trollops. TROLLOPS. But don’t worry, these wacky nuns will show them how to be. I used to think the younger nun was kinda hot in those movies. even though it wasn’t her actually singing, she’s sort of the prototype for tiny white girls who sing like fat black ladies (Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera [ok Spanish but you get it], a lot of others). Adele has broken the mold of tiny white girls who sing like fat black ladies by being a fat white girl who sings like a fatter black lady. I feel like we’re covering a lot of ground here. That’s good. And here comes disc 2. I’m gonna go make some lunch. Okay I’m back. Lean Cuisine flatbread sandwich and a coffee. I had a hankering for a toasted bagel with cream cheese after watching last night’s Workaholics. The goth girl that was on the show last night… yeah I’m pretty sure we’re married now. If she reads this I hope I’m dead. Need a break for now.

Favorite Tracks: disc 1: “Z.N.S.”, “Intermezzo / Yu-Gung”, “Seele Brenn” “Armenia”
Disc 2:  “Armenia II”, “Ich Bin’s”, “Wardrobe”, “Has der Luge”

LARD – the Last Temptation of Reid

This makes me wanna run around a Tower Records in 1995 chugging Jolt Cola while scenes from a Greg Araki film flip in my head like flashcards. Naked Rose McGowan flashcards. It’s hard for me not to love this album. You can’t go wrong with Jello Biafra’s twisted satirical genius and Ministry at their thrashy best. It doesn’t even sound that dated. Least I don’t think so. Last good thing Al Jourgenson ever did. At least Biafra did a couple of cool records with the Melvins. I’m gonna pretend “Forkboy” is a tribute to Abdullah the Butcher. The Communion should cover this entire album like Six Feet Under did with “Back in Black”. It would hands down be the most useless thing anyone has ever created. Since the 90s are making a “comeback”, maybe Lard will reactivate. You know how I know the 90s are back in style? The increase of heroin related deaths in Suffolk County. HA-CHACHACHACHACHA. I always seem to forget that Biafra is one of my favorite songwriters. I remember him describing his intent as far as lyrics go; he wanted to take the horrors of an Alice Cooper album and make them about “real world” monsters. Not that Alice didn’t occasionally dabble in reality (see “Dead Babies” and “Only Women Bleed”), but Biafra took it even farther. If Communion won’t cover the whole album, we should at least do “Drug Raid at 4 AM”.

Favorite Tracks: “Forkboy”, “Mate Spawn & Die”, “Drug Raid at 4 AM”, “Sylvestre Matuschka”, and the rest.

KILLING TIME – Brightside

Classic NYHC is classic. The title track has one of those great “you’re fucked now” riffs. So I broke down and tried those Doritos tacos. I’ve never had the beef from Taco Bell in my life. It was okay I guess. I can see why people get hooked on it; goes down easy and costs less than a pack of gum. It’s mostly lettuce, so health. Love the production on this. most tough guy bands sound lame now because they don’t have this raw, punchy awesome sound. Well Harm’s Way is pretty fucking beastly, but they almost border on mid-tempo grind than hardcore. I could never get away with writing music like this. I’m not hitting anyone. I’d rather chip away at my self-esteem until all that’s left is mind-eroding insanity. Or talk about lady parts. Most recent lyric topics for me have been bladder infections, intergender tag matches going wrong, holding my shirt while I fuck your wife (actual lyric), and the usual fever dream dung.

Favorite Tracks – “Brightside”, “Fools Die”, “My Reason”, “Wall of Hate”

SKINNY PUPPY – VIVIsectVI

I got into SP way later than I should have. One day I found Mind, Rabies, Cleanse Fold Manipulate, and Too Dark Park all used and just bought them all. I think footage from the Too Dark Park tour (and the accompanying video screen footage) sealed it for me. sure, they’re basically a more girlfriend accommodating version of early Test Dept and SPK, but I can’t help but love the vibe of their 80s output. The lyrics are also pretty underrated. Very schizophrenic, but literary. That also made me give them another shot. It wasn’t the forced “check me out I’m spooky and talking about drugs!” juvenile posturing of many of their peers and imitators. They really feel like a mental patient’s clip-art put to words. Really brings the music to another level. I am very happy today, because I finally have a hard copy of Subconscious Cruelty to call my own. I feel like I talk about this film all the time, but until now I’ve only had a low-grade d/l of the film, as it only exists as a Swedish Region 2 DVD. Well I finally got a new remote for my Multi-Region DVD player, and a copy of the film popped up on Amazon, and now it is mine. I can’t wait until I’m done having sex with it so I can watch it on my big TV. Every fan of truly demented underground cinema should seek it out. Fits right and snug with Nekromantik, Tetsuo: the Iron Man, and other bloodsoaked bugfucks that almost approach art.  Not sure why it hasn’t found a proper stateside release, but it could have something to do with all the semen and baby killing. People get very testy about semen and baby killing. What does Subconscious Cruelty have to do with Skinny Puppy? Not much… except for the film’s director Karim Hussain mentioning in an interview that the culture of the early 90s (industrial music and heroin abuse. Didn’t hear about that on VH1’s I WANNA GIVE THE 90S A KISS ON THE DICK. Maybe it was between the segments about Blossom’s hats and the cum in Bill Clinton’s pants) was a not-quite-so-indirect influence on the tone of the film. I absolutely see it. There’s this novel by Tim Lucas (who provided a fantastic essay that came with Kino’s reissues of Jean Rollin’s films) called Throat Sprockets that sort of fun-house-mirrors my search for anything related to Subconscious Cruelty. It’s about this dude who sees this obscure surreal erotic film (same title as the novel) and becomes obsessed with it, attempting to find prints of it, acting out with other people, hunting for magazine articles etc. eventually he finds a dealer of hard-to-find films (who may also peddle kiddie porn and snuff films, naturally) and gets a VHS copy of it, which he watches until the tape wears out… you get the idea. The book is a great snap shot of a time just before we were able to find everything on the internet, when you really had to dig to find info on rare items, be they films or music or literature. After I wrote all this, I went and tested my copy of the film. Doesn’t read. My DVD player is too old I think. I need to get a new one anyway. I have a copy, though… so that’s something… to have sex with.

Favorite Tracks: “Dogshit”, “Human Disease (S.K.U.M.M.)”, “Hospital Waste”, “Fritter (Stella’s Home)”,
